Ankle Fracture Treatment Options
Julie Neumann • May 28, 2024

Ankle fractures are a common injury that can happen from several causes, including falls, sports-related injuries, and accidents. It's critical to get medical assistance as soon as possible after suffering an ankle fracture to ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Fortunately, depending on the severity of the fracture, there are several efficient treatment options for ankle fractures

Immobilization for Ankle Injury Treatment

For stable ankle fractures where the bones remain aligned, immobilization with a cast, splint, or walking boot can be sufficient for healing. Immobilization stabilizes the ankle bones and joint, reduces pain, and promotes fracture healing. You may need to use crutches or another type of assistive device to avoid putting weight on the injured ankle during the initial stages of recovery.

Ankle Injury Closed Reduction

A closed reduction treatment can straighten the broken bones for certain types of ankle fractures without necessarily requiring surgery. A closed reduction involves Dr. Neumann utilizing traction or manual procedures to realign the fractured bones. Immobilization would be necessary after the bones have been straightened to preserve the correct alignment while the ankle heals.

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) for Ankle Fractures

Surgery may be necessary to straighten the broken bones and stabilize the ankle joint in severe situations. To access the fractured bones during an ORIF treatment, the Dr. Neumann makes one or more incisions. Then, specialized hardware, like screws, plates, or rods is used to keep the bones in place while they heal. For unstable fractures, ORIF is frequently advised.

Ankle Fracture External Fixation

An external fixation device may temporarily stabilize the broken bones in certain complex ankle fractures. This apparatus is made up of metal pins that are driven into the bones above and below the fracture site and attached to an external frame. Placement of an external fixator requires a surgery. External fixation allows for soft tissue healing and edema to subside while maintaining stability for the ankle joint before undergoing definitive surgery.

Physical Therapy for Ankle Fracture Rehabilitation

Physical therapy is essential for ankle fracture recovery regardless of the treatment type. Physical therapists create customized workout regimens to assist in regaining the injured ankle's strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Therapy can involve functional activities, balance training, strengthening exercises, and stretching to increase mobility and function.

Pain Management for Ankle Fractures

Treatment for ankle fractures will also include pain management, especially during the early recuperation phases. To help manage pain, Dr. Neumann may recommend prescription pain relievers or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Ice packs on the ankle as well as elevation can also help relieve pain and reduce swelling.

The degree and complexity of the ankle injury will determine the best treatment options for ankle fractures. Treatment aims to maximize healing, restore function, and reduce the risk of long-term issues, whether using conservative methods like immobilization and physical therapy or surgical techniques like ORIF or external fixation. If you have been injured, you should work closely with Dr. Neumann to determine the best action.

You must receive fast diagnosis and treatment if you have an ankle injury. Make an appointment with Dr. Julie Neumann right away to get started on your recovery and avoid additional issues.
